生平
1938年，汉姆斯利出生于美国宾夕法尼亚州费城，他和母亲一起在南费城生活，母亲是一个工厂的工人。 汉姆斯利很早就从学习辍学了，他参加了美国空军，并且在空军服役4年。 退役后的汉姆斯利回到费城当了邮政局的一个公务员，晚上则去表演学校上课补习。 后来，汉姆斯利搬迁到了纽约市，仍旧在邮政局工作，晚上则是当业余演员。 1970年代，美国百老汇出现了汉姆斯利的身影。[1][2]
